Express Yourself

At first, before I started notebooking, writing was not something I really enjoyed, and I couldn’t even call it a hobby. When I came into sixth grade English, my love for writing grew tenfold as I got to “know” it better.

Ever since I started keeping a notebook, I always tried to customize it, to make it reflect my personality. I decorated the covers, used my favorite colors, and added tons of drawings. I wanted my notebook to express me, but also be unique. How do you express yourself with your notebook?

Something else that got me thinking about my notebook was a post that one of my fellow classmates had written on May 10th. He said that he had named his notebook and I thought, Well, my current notebook already has eyes, so what if I were to name mine? Do you have any ideas for what I should call it? I would love some suggestions!

Hi! I’m AAA and I am a student in Ms. Haseltine’s sixth grade class. I love to create art, read, and of course, write. When I’m not doing any of those things, I enjoy hanging out with my friends. You can find more of my writing in my blog, The Reader Life.

Thank you again to these writers from Michelle Haseltine's sixth-grade classes, for taking over Sharing Our Notebooks this month.  What a delight! Please check in each Saturday morning in May to see who wins each week's notebook giveaway!

Please know that Sharing Our Notebooks welcomes all kinds of notebook keepers - of any age and interest - to open up their pages and share their process.  If you are interested in writing in this space, please contact me, Amy, directly.  I welcome you!

  1. AAA, I am so surprised that writing wasn't a passion for you before sixth-grade, but I agree that getting to "know" writing is an essential way to become a writer. Love your thoughts! Love this post! Thank you for writing a post!

  2. I am smiling away over here, mulling over names for this adorable notebook! Your question reminds me of Cynthia Rylant's book THE OLD WOMAN WHO NAMED THINGS. Hmmm... How about Googly? :) You are so right that often when we come to know something, we appreciate it more. How fortunate you and your students are to have Ms. Haseltine in your lives. My sixth grade teacher was a life changer, and my life still ripples from his teachings. Peace and gratitude for your post. xx

  3. I am arriving late to the notebook-naming party, and I suspect you already have a name for the place for your words (with eyes peeping out to the world). I love how we personalize the places where we keep our stories and poems and doodles and more, and hope your notebook becomes your faithful companion.
