Notebook Oxymorons

For the month of May, Michelle Haseltine’s sixth-grade students are taking over Amy Ludwig VanDerwater blog, Sharing our notebooks. We are two of her students hoping to share our writing with all of the readers of her blog. We present to you, a list of notebook oxymorons. Definition of an oxymoron

A useless entry
A boring page
A dull cover
A generalization without a counterargument
A long haiku
A confined page space
A page that uses no description
Lines that don’t limit you
A boring story
A plot without a twist
A fantasy without magic
A mystery without a detective
A list that is truly complete
A notebook with enough pages
A pen that has no ink
And Finally…
A notebook without love

Make sure to take these oxymorons and do the exact opposite of what they say!

The The Random Dude is an avid middle school reader who loves to blog. He lives in Ashburn Virginia. He has written many fiction stories which have yet to be published. He loves biking and loves being with nature.

Please know that Sharing Our Notebooks welcomes all kinds of notebook keepers - of any age and interest - to open up their pages and share their process.  If you are interested in writing in this space, please contact me, Amy, directly.  I welcome you!

  2. I love this. My favorites are the first three. I may have to put them in my notebook as a reminder!

  4. A creative list of all that a notebook is "not" is a great way to celebrate what wonderful things notebooks are! Thanks for this unique idea! It could be used in other ways, too. Notebook writing starts so many ideas, as you've shown!

  5. Simply delightful! Now you have me imagining a notebook with endless pages! Thank you for this; I enjoyed thinking about each entry on your (truly incomplete?) list. Peace. xx

  6. What a hilarious, yet serious and real list. I really enjoyed the “long haiku” example. Keep up the great writing. I also visited your blogs and was absolutely blown away. I will definitely direct my sixth graders to you guys and use your writing in the future when I introduce blogs to my students.

  7. These are funny and thought provoking - what an amazing thing to do as a writer, make me (a reader) smile, but also think. Very interesting. I want to now write some of these, but I am not sure I'm as clever. Well got to start some place - right?
