Mash Up Lyrics and Art - Karen Windness

From Karen Windness:

1. Think of a song you really like. You probably have one ear-worming your head right now!

2. Write down your favorite lyrics from that song. I chose THE MONSTER by Eminem and Rihanna:

I'm friends with the monster that's under my bed
Get along with the voices inside of my head
You trying to save me, stop holding your breath
And you think I'm crazy, yeah, you think I'm crazy

3. Think of a favorite picture book that goes along with the lyrics. When I think of monsters, I think of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE by Maurice Sendak.

If you chose Katy Perry’s ROAR, you could pair it with MR. TIGER GOES WILD by Peter Brown. There are lots of options! Be creative!

4. Take some notes and do some sketches to get a feel for the style of your book and how you want to combine the lyrics.

5. Draw or collage in your notebook. Get messy! Try different media – pencils, paints, ribbon, thread, found objects. Notebooks are great places to experiment. Let the illustrator of your book inspire you, too, and blast your song while you create!
